Citigroup sells CTS to Wipro for $127 mn

by Guest 12/23/2008 10:45:00 PM

Global financial services giant Citigroup Inc on Tuesday sold its 100 per cent subsidiary Citi Technology Services Ltd to Wipro for $127 million. CTS is an India-based captive provider of information technology services and solutions to Citi entities worldwide.

As part of the transaction, an all-cash deal, Bangalore-headquartered Wipro and Citi will sign a master services agreement for the delivery of technology infrastructure services and application development and maintenance services for six years.

Under the agreement, Wipro will get at least $500 million as services revenue from Citi.

Citigroup Global Technology Head Jagdish Rao, based in New York, said at a press conference that this $500 million is a 'minimum commitment' and it could grow to 'twice as much' in six or seven years.

With two centres each in Mumbai and Chennai, CTS provides IT services to Citi and its affiliates around the world.

CTS's 1,650 employees, trained in Citi processes and technologies and servicing Citi businesses in more than 32 countries, will now come under the Wipro Technologies fold, the global IT services business arm of New York Stock Exchange-listed Wipro Ltd.

CTS clocked revenue of $53 million in the calendar year 2007 and the earning is expected to go up to $80 million in 2008.

Apart from competencies in TIS, CTS has expertise in ADM for cards, capital markets and corporate banking.

Wipro officials said the transaction strengthens the Bangalore-based company's relationship with Citi.

Rao denied that the sale was triggered by turmoil in financial services, saying Citigroup would have gone ahead with the deal irrespective of the situation.

Wipro Joint CEO (IT business and member of the board) Girish S Paranjpe said Citi has played a pioneering role in leveraging technology for banking, adding Wipro is pleased that its domain expertise and infrastructure management capabilities positioned it as Citigroup's partner of choice.

"This position has further strengthened with this strategic transaction," Paranjpe said.

The transaction is expected to close by March next year.

Wipro senior vice president (finance solutions) Soumitro Ghosh said: "Citi Technology Services team's expertise in addressing the risk and compliance issues for banking industry positions us well to offer similar scale and complexity of services to other leading banks in the United States and Europe."

How To Network: For Introverts

by Guest 12/20/2008 8:00:00 PM
I have a problem. I’m an introvert. I’m not shy. I’m not afraid of being in public. But I am horrible at chit-chat and gossip. If I spend an evening at a social function with people I don’t know or don’t like, I get home and feel like I’ve spent all day at the ocean. It’s that fighting-the-waves and drained-by-the-sun kind of tired. I would rather spend four hours with my head stapled to the carpet. I would be more comfortable that way.

In engineering school, I was fine. Engineering classes aren’t particularly interactive, and in study groups, we only spoke when needed. In business school… well that was tough. I tried to sit in the back most of the time so as not to participate. But it was a mistake not to go to all the social functions. There are probably people from my classes in high places now, and they won’t remember me and I don’t know what they do.

For better or for worse, connections make the world go round. Just this week I was reading about the importance of networks in the VC industry. It applies to all of business though. Knowing lots of people reduces your headaches by a factor of 10 when you need to get something done. Requests from strangers don’t get filled as quickly as requests from acquaintances or friends. If you don’t network, you find yourself in situations (particularly as an entrepreneur or business owner) where you need someone with a certain skill set and you don’t even know where to start looking. Then you have to advertise a position or opportunity, and weed through the applicants to find the 5% that are actually worth talking to.

Over the last 7 years I’ve made a lot of progress. Here’s what I’ve learned about networking as an introvert.

*Networking is an investment, not a nuisance.

Imagine if you could always find what you needed in just 1 or 2 phone calls. If you are well networked, you probably can. By putting in the time to build your network, you save time when you need to get things done. Well networked people don’t have to waste time firing off random emails to people they don’t know, buying leads or industry lists, or hunting through hundreds of resumes for the right candidate. Pick your poison. Do you want to put in the time now, or later?

* At first, you have to kiss a lot of frogs.
Sometimes you have to start by picking events at random. You spend an hour in a very uncomfortable setting, but you learn what to go to and what to skip. Eventually you find a few people or events that you like.

* Don’t spend too much time on it.
If you wear yourself out, you won’t ever want to do it. Accept your limitations and just do 1 or 2 events a month. It takes a long time to build these relationships, so it’s better to stick with a few groups over the long haul than 10 groups for two months.

* Do cool things.
Introverts typically don’t like to talk about themselves - we prefer to talk about ideas. Force yourself to discuss some of the things you’ve done. Don’t brag, make sure they are relevant to the conversation. Then the extroverts can talk about you and pass your achievements along. It gives you credibility in some circles. Yes, I realize you would rather be accepted for what you think and know, but the truth is that the world measures you by what you do.

* Invite people to lunch.
Or invite them to coffee or for a beer after work. If you meet a fellow introvert, he/she is unlikely to do the inviting, so you have to do it.

* Go regularly to things you like.
When I was living on the Space Coast, I went to a group called Founders Forum. It was for entrepreneurs and investors. I learned a lot at the meetings, but it took about 6 months for people to start recognizing me and saying hi. It was uncomfortable, being 23 in a room of mostly middle aged people. You just have to keep showing up, month after month.

* Analyze your results.
Introverts are intuitive and analytical. Use that skill. What is working? What isn’t? Where do you get the most bang for your buck?

* Find the key nodes in the network.
Don’t find a marketing person, find someone who knows lots of marketing people and then invite that person to lunch. If networking wears you out, you will be better off finding the ten key people who all know lots of other people, than finding and maintaining fifty relationships. This takes a long time because it is hard to find the right person. Look for introverts that, for whatever reason, are in jobs that force them to be well connected. Extroverts that share one of your core passions are also a good match.

* Don’t network just for the sake of networking.
There is a book called “Never Eat Alone”. That’s all fine and good for extroverts, but we introverts can’t network just to network. As you meet more people, focus on spending your time with the ones that are the best fit, and focus less on meeting new people.

The hardest part for me was the first few events. I sometimes feel like I don’t know what to say when I meet new people. I would be soooo much more comfortable if someone started a conversation by asking me what I thought of utilitarianism as a way to make ethical decisions, or whether Sarbanes-Oxley has encouraged companies to list on other exchanges. Ideas usually seem so much more interesting than people. But, by sticking it out, month after month, I’ve slowly learned some good things to say, and grown more comfortable meeting strangers. So trust me when I say it gets easier.

The majority gets to set the rules, and the majority of people are extroverts (70% I think). Networking is an important key to unlocking your own potential. So play by the rules of the game the best that you can, o`r don’t sit and complain when you have a great idea and no one to help you launch it. I hope you can learn from my experiences, so that you don’t waste as much time as I did fighting the inevitable.

Impact of IT in a family - Hilarious!

by Guest 12/18/2008 3:57:00 PM
Sekar (Calling his family from Amsterdam): Good Evening Mom and Dad. Where is my wife Sheela?

Dad: Just now I called her. She is on the way to home after taking our grandson Rahul from his school.

Sekar: Let us wait for her few minutes and we will start this discussion.
(By the time Sheela entered in to the house.. Sekar continue the meeting)

I hope you know the Agenda of the meeting which I had mentioned in the meeting request. Even though let me read out the agenda once again
1. Status update/Discussion on Last Week Action Items
2. Family Strategy
2. Rahul's Education
3. Medical Insurance for Mom and Dad

I hope every one have the printout of last week MOM (Minutes of Meeting).
Dear Mom can you please update the status of tasks which you are taking care of?

Mom: Sekar, I am taking care of kitchen module which involves making products like Sambar, Rasam, Curd Rice, Vegetable Biriyani.I am not comfortable in handling the tools for making Non Vegetarian products. You suggest some training in Hlite. However after making these products, I am giving to your Dad for Acceptance testing. Once he satisfied with the quality of taste, we pass it to Dining Hall. One more thing, I would like to share with you. As you have suggested during my appraisal discussion, now I have stopped crying while watching mega serials in TV

Sekar: Sounds Good.

Sekar: Now coming to Dad. Dad can you please update us?

Dad: Yes. My dear son. I have completed my tasks by paying the current bill and phone bill with in time.

Sekar: That's good

Dad: But I couldn't pay the premium amount of 9200.00 of the LIC plan which you had taken for tax reduction purpose.

Sekar: It doesn't look nice dad. I have sent you the amount already and given clear instructions.
Can you explain to me what went wrong?

Dad: On Tuesday night suddenly one of our team mate (your mom) fell down on the floor when she was running to catch Rahul. Then we took her to hospital and spent that amount for her medical expenses.

Mom: Sekar, I would like to add on what your Dad said, that was true. I got heavy injury in my legs and I was in hospital for two days. So now we don't have money to pay for the premium.

Sekar: Sheela..! Would you aware of this? As a home lead, I expect you to track these issues and send it to me on daily basis. What are you doing (With stress on 'doing') after coming from college?

Sheela: Will do it Sekar. You know that the college, I am working is very far from our home. Every day I come back home at 6 pm and sit with Rahul for assisting him for doing his home work.

Sekar: Ok. Coming to second Agenda point .Due to this financial crisis we need to change the strategy of running our family. I am looking for your cooperation in the following cost cutting activities. I want to see the cost benefit of 40 % in this month budget after implementing this

ü
Asking servant maid to leave her job
ü
  Stop ordering Pizzas for dinner
ü
Avoid Tooth paste and use Neem sticks/Banyan Tree Sticks
ü
Switch on TV only for watching Sunday Movie and Friday Oliyum Ozhiyum(Well known program for film songs in Podigai TV)
ü
Wise to listen news from our near by portion when they watch news in TV
ü
Every Saturday visit our relative's homes and spend the whole day including break fast, lunch and Dinner
ü
Don't invite anybody to our home. Sunday our relatives might come to our house. Just lock the door outside and do your work inside silently.
ü
Everybody assemble in adjacent street Perumal temple on Sunday for breakfast. They provide 'Pongal' as 'prasadam' which is good in taste
ü
Sheela stop going for gym and Yoga class. Use Attural (Made up of Stone for making Dosa /idly dough), Ammikal (Replacement of Mixie) instead of grinder and Mixie. Mom please give KT to Sheela about this.
ü
Don't buy excess of things and store it in Fridge. Use big Mud pots for cool water.
ü
Everybody go to bed early around 6:30 pm. Ask Rahul to do his homework when he comes back from school immediately during the hours sunlight is available. If not ask him to read under street light. He will become like Lincoln (Former US President) one day.
ü
Use as much of cycle for transportation to near by places(It will help you to reduce fat and Cholesterol content)
ü
I know you are eager to watch latest release 'Vaaranam Aayiram'. Don't plan for that. Wait till next year Diwali to watch the same movie in Kalaignar TV

If you have any clarifications contact Sheela@kitchen

Coming to second Agenda point. Sheela, can you please update me about Rahul's Education. In which standard he is studying? Whether he got any double promotion? He was writing annual exam for third standard when I was leaving for Amsterdam.

Sheela: Sekar, I am bit worrying about his education. I have tracked his efforts, schedule in our OHM+ tool. I found 20 % in Effort variance and 35 % in schedule deviation. His learning curve goes down in the control chart which you can see in the report, I have sent you yesterday.

Sekar: Thanks for your measurements. I will review the report and we will discuss it on next week's call. I have a client meeting now. So we will discuss the third agenda item next week. Mom and Dad.. can you please drop out from the call. I wanted to talk to Sheela about few personal things and Dad, don't forget to circulate the MOM to every one.

Sheela: Hello Sekar..

Sheela: Hello…Hello…

Sheela: Hello…

Amazing Gmail tip You Don’t Know about. Seriously.

by Guest 12/16/2008 1:27:00 PM

Just about when I thought I got everything out of Gmail, I discovered my top favorite feature. Let’s say that your email address is ‘GeorgeBush@gmail.com’, basically everything sent to any of the following email addresses will be forwarded to your primary email.

GeorgeBush@gmail.com
G.eorgeBush@gmail.com
Ge.orgeBush@gmail.com

GeorgeBus.h@gmail.com

GeorgeBush@googlemail.com
G.eorgeBush@googlemail.com
Ge.orgeBush@googlemail.com

GeorgeBus.h@googlemail.com

And that’s not all, you can place as many dots as you want, it can be even something like ‘G.e.o.r.g.e.B.u.s.h@gmail.com’ and you’ll still get it on ‘GeorgeBush@gmail.com’Additionally, I just also found out that you can embed random text to your email ID using ‘+’ sign. That is to say ‘GeorgeBush+anythingyouwant@gmail.com’ can be used as your email address, as well.

Ok I got it. Now what ?

1. One email for every purposeInstead of using different email addresses for various purposes (work, school, friends, etc.) you can use different variations of your Gmail and filter incoming mails by ’sent to’ address. For instance, all incoming mail sent to ‘Name.Surname@gmail.com’ can be put to folder ‘work’, messages sent to ‘NameSurname@gmail.com’ can be put to ‘friends’, ‘N.ameSurname@gmail.com’ can be used for newsletters, and so on.

2. Track/Block spammersWhen signing up for some website, say thatwebsite.com, you can add thatwebsite to your Gmail user ID (eg. GeorgeBush+thatwebsite@gmail.com). This way you can block your subscription whenever you want and even identify those websites that distribute your email address to spammers.

Standard Pakistani response template

Dear Prime Minister Manmohan Singh/ Atal Bihari Vajpayee /Narasimha Rao/Rajiv Gandhi,

Pakistan strongly condemns/is shocked by /is pleasantly surprised with the success of our "freedom fighters" in the loss of dozens/hundreds/thousands/millions of innocent lives in the bomb blasts/sniper attack/hijacking /religious riots/other disaster that occurred in a busy MUMBAI marketplace/ train/housing colony /Indian parliament building/temple //Kashmir /Assam/Punjab/ Gujarat / MUMBAI\Other.

The Pakistani citizens/soldiers/"freedom fighters" / "friendship agents"/students who were caught red-handed /found dead at the scene of the crime/convicted of the crime are actually undercover Indian/American/ Israeli agents. Any Pakistanis proven to be guilty of terrorism will be rewarded handsomely /dealt with severely/promoted to Lt. Colonel/given a new Indian passport and sent back to India /handed over to the Americans as proof of our commitment in the war on terror.

There are no Pakistani army-funded training camps /terrorist camps/ madrasaas in Azad Kashmir/Afghanistan/ Nepal /Bangladesh . The satellite images/photographs/eyewitness accounts/videotaped confessions obtained by the Indians is fraudulent/ fake/ inconclusive/are actually from Indian terrorist camps and is part of a larger RAW/ CIA/Mossad conspiracy to destabilize the Pakistani government by stalling democracy /encouraging sectarian violence/undermining Pakistani institutions/ causing the next military coup in Pakistan . A destabilized Pakistani government/mafia could cause Pakistan to become a dangerous nuclear Wal-Mart/Target/Seven-Eleven and a terrorist breeding ground/university/research lab that would be worse for the world.

We hope this will not derail the peace process started with the recent India-Pakistan cricket series / Lahore bus yatra/ Muzafarabad-Srinagar road opening /Bollywood peace concert/open borders initiative/other confidence-building measures . We look forward to justifying further attacks against innocent civilians /resolving the core issue of Kashmir / developing best-of-breed plausible deniability defenses.

We stand by/are plotting against our Indian brethren in their hour/ days /years/decades of pain.

Petrol prices cut by Rs 5, diesel by Rs 2 per litre

by Guest 12/5/2008 7:59:00 PM
NEW DELHI: The government on Friday cut prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 2 a litre, respectively, as an interim measure while watching

the international prices before effecting more cuts.

As an interim measure, the government has decided to cut the prices with effect from midnight tonight, Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said.

There is no change in the prices of LPG (cooking gas) and kerosene.

The government had in June raised the prices of petrol and diesel by Rs 5 and Rs 3 a litre, respectively and that of LPG by Rs 50 a cylinder to protect oil marketing firms against losses on account of a rally in crude prices.

Crude oil had subsequently climbed to a record high of USD 147 a barrel in July, but has since come to USD 43.5 a barrel.

Editor Mumbai (Times of India)

by Guest 12/3/2008 5:21:00 PM

LETTER TO PRIME MINISTER

Dear Mr. Prime minister

I am a typical mouse from Mumbai. In the local train compartment which has capacity of 100 persons, I travel with 500 more mouse. Mouse at least squeak but we don't even do that.

Today I heard your speech. In which you said 'NO BODY WOULD BE SPARED'. I would like to remind you that fourteen years has passed since serial bomb blast in Mumbai took place. Dawood was the main conspirator. Till today he is not caught. All our bolywood actors, our builders, our Gutka king meets him but your Government can not catch him. Reason is simple; all your ministers are hand in glove with him. If any attempt is made to catch him everybody will be exposed. Your statement 'NOBODY WOULD BE SPARED' is nothing but a cruel joke on this unfortunate people of India.

Enough is enough. As such after seeing terrorist attack carried out by about a dozen young boys I realize that if same thing continues days are not away when terrorist will attack by air, destroy our nuclear reactor and there will be one more Hiroshima.

We the people are left with only one mantra. Womb to Bomb to Tomb. You promised Mumbaikar Shanghai what you have given us is Jalianwala Baug.

Today only your home minister resigned. What took you so long to kick out this joker? Only reason was that he was loyal to Gandhi family. Loyalty to Gandhi family is more important than blood of innocent people, isn't it?

I am born and bought up in Mumbai for last fifty eight years. Believe me corruption in Maharashtra is worse than that in Bihar. Look at all the politician, Sharad Pawar, Chagan Bhujbal, Narayan Rane, Bal Thackray , Gopinath Munde, Raj Thackray, Vilasrao Deshmukh all are rolling in money.  Vilasrao Deshmukh is one of the worst Chief minister I have seen. His only business is to increase the FSI every other day, make money and send it to Delhi so Congress can fight next election. Now the clown has found new way and will increase FSI for fisherman so they can build concrete house right on sea shore. Next time terrorist can comfortably live in those house , enjoy the beauty of sea and then attack the Mumbai at their will.

Recently I had to purchase house in Mumbai. I met about two dozen builders. Everybody wanted about 30% in black. A common person like me knows this and with all your intelligent agency & CBI you and your finance minister are not aware of it. Where all the black money goes? To the underworld isn't it? Our politicians take help of these goondas to vacate people by force. I myself was victim of it. If you have time please come to me, I will tell you everything.

If this has been land of fools, idiots then I would not have ever cared to write you this letter. Just see the tragedy, on one side we are reaching moon, people are so intelligent and on other side you politician has converted nectar into deadly poison. I am everything Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Schedule caste, OBC, Muslim OBC, Christian Schedule caste, Creamy Schedule caste only what I am not is INDIAN. You politician have raped every part of mother India by your policy of divide and rule.

Take example of former president Abdul Kalam. Such a intelligent person, such a fine human being. You politician didn't even spare him.  Your party along with opposition joined the hands, because politician feels they are supreme and there is no place for good person.

Dear Mr Prime minister you are one of the most intelligent person, most learned person. Just wake up, be a real SARDAR. First and foremost expose all selfish politician. Ask Swiss bank to give name of all Indian account holder. Give reins of CBI to independent agency. Let them find wolf among us. There will be political upheaval but that will better than dance of death which we are witnessing every day.  Just give us ambient where we can work honestly and without fear. Let there be rule of law. Everything else will be taken care of.

Choice is yours Mr. Prime Minister. Do you want to be lead by one person or you want to lead the nation of 100 Crore people?
