Do we really deserve a Men's Day?

by Guest 3/11/2010 1:33:00 PM
The build up to Women’s Day this year has been quite baffling for me. Lots of emails floating in the office emphasizing on the importance and existence of a Woman and also about the mega celebrations on the Women’s Day, including activities like ethnic fashion show and tempting and free sumptuous snacks to name a few but all with a disclaimer of ‘ For Women Only’, as if it has been deliberately planned to outcast people like me who are more than interested in both the fashion show and free sumptuous snacks. If this wasn’t enough the moment I entered my office this morning, I was in a fix that whether I have entered a wrong place or what, because I was totally misled by the soothing smell of 100’s of exotic perfumes and deodorants, forcing me to believe that I have mistakenly entered the banquet hall of Hotel Taj Krishna but for the same boorish expression on the building's security guard's face which made me realize that I am very much in the same place, I visit daily. Moments later I was again confused to find myself in a Ladies Sangeet gathering, but for their ID cards, the women all around were all heavily clad in none less than bridal saarees, overtly laden with truck loads of glittering jewelery and with atleast 3 extra layers of make up than usual, painted on their slightly familiar faces. Somehow I garnered little strength and tried to strategically place myself besides two other guys waiting for the elevator, who were also looking equally shocked, oppressed and frightened by the in flavor attitude of Women's Day. Now to add to our fury the elevator door opened and we found three equally over dressed prospective brides on the other side of the door, one of them was reading the Women's Day special edition of The Times of India and the other two were vociferously discussing the odds of passing of Women Reservation Bill in the parliament. I was anxiously waiting along with the two other pity souls on the edge of the elevator door for our destined floors to come, we were in such a state of petrification that can only be matched by 1st year engineering students in front of their most dreaded seniors, anticipating the cruelest form of ragging. But after probably one of the longest wait of my life the elevator doors opened on my floor and I almost ran to reach to my cubicle seat only to drink one full bottle of chilled water and kept wondering can't this day be an optional holiday for all the non women employees?

All the while I was thinking what bad or what cruel all the men on this planet have done that they don't have a day called 'International Men's Day' celebrating the cause of masculinity or manhood. The maximum the men get is a day called ' Father's Day' but to qualify for that one has to be a father at least. So no luck for young and mis opportune people like me here too. So what could be the reason of no such concept like 'Men's Day' in practice, as against the annually celebrated 'Women's Day'? One reason could be, we the men don't have the stamina and capacity to continuously chat on endlessly and hence we don't qualify for such felicitations. Another reason can be we the men don't have those extra terrestrial wooing powers which the likes of Urmilas and Shakuntalas had which made the likes of staunchest saints and yogis drooling for these ladies, leaving behind all there ethics and beliefs. Another probabilistic reason can be we hardly stand anywhere when it comes to the qualities of beauty and good looks. So with all these follies how can we even dream of a special day dedicated to our fraternity. So there is no point cribbing and getting jealous on the mega celebrations on Women's Day. In this hazy scenario the best we can do is to wish and pray to the almighty god that ' Agle janam mujhe beti hi keejo'.

But on a full on serious note I salute the intensity with which the women all around the world celebrate the concept of Women's Day. I really feel that all the women, be it our mothers, be it our sisters, be it our wives, be it our daughters or be it our house maids, all of them deserve a standing ovation for all the sacrifice, love and care they have given for the well being of the entire mankind. We the men of this planet can not repay this debt by any means, the least we can do is we can minimize this deficit by not harassing these beautiful women by the means of eve teasing, domestic violence or cruel things like dowry demands. The love, the care and the concern which we receive from all these wonderful angels is way beyond our imagination and rather priceless in comparison to any monetary or materialistic substitute we yearn for. We should always give due credence and respect to all the pain a woman bears for us right from the most excruciating pain of all pains, i.e the Labor Pain to the other unbearable mental pains we experience in our lives, just to give us a happy existence all through our lives. Also if there is some love, harmony and peace in today's world its just because of these beautiful princess, otherwise we men are far too carnivorous and blood thirsty to survive the myths and demons of anger, lust, power and pride.

So let us all take a pledge to treat all the women in our lives with utmost love and care and rather place them one pedestal above all the men, keeping aside our inflated male chauvinist egos and join all these beautiful ladies in the celebration of this day not just as a Women's Day but more so as a remembrance for all the sacrifices and act of love and kindness they have continuously bestowed on us. And thanks to all those beautiful women in our lives whose unconditional love and care for us is much deeper than those six layers of multi cosmetic makeups:)

Happy Women's Day!

Microsoft may launch Zune-like phone

by Guest 3/9/2010 3:33:00 PM

If Apple and Google can launch their own smartphones, can Microsoft be left behind? Not likely, if one goes by the internet buzz that the Redmond-based software giant is partnering original device manufacturers and mobile service providers like Verizon to launch a cellphone by mid-2010.

A techie blog site, Gizmodo, broke the news with snapshots of the mobile device, after which cyberspace is being flooded with news that Microsoft is working on an internal project titled 'Pink'.

"We think Microsoft is partnering with a few ODM manufactures to create the Zune-like phone, which includes 720p HD video and at least a 5 mega pixel camera," a senior technology analyst based in Hong Kong told Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

Brazil tracking India's 3G auction course

by Guest 3/8/2010 6:04:00 PM

The Brazilian government, which is also planning to hold an auction of 3G broadband wireless spectrum, has communicated to the

Department of Telecommunications that it would like to know more about the e-auction method that would be used by India [ Images ].

"The talks are at a preliminary stage. They (Brazil [ Images ]) have expressed their interest in our e-auction process," a senior DoT official told Business Standard on the condition of anonymity.

The auction of 3G, the airwaves which enable high-speed interent and broadband wireless access (BWA), will be held in India from April 9. DoT is set to use an e-auction method that would allow prospective bidders to access the platform using a standard web browser.

Brazil had taken the 3G route in 2007, where Vivo Participacoes, Claro, TIM and Tele Norte Leste Participacoes were the winners and remain the leading 3G providers in Brazil. The country now expects to auction the rights for around 44 licences for 3G broadband wireless (like our BWA) operators by June this year, according to reports.

Considering Brazil and India are both developing markets that have experienced high growth rate in the mobile population, the two markets have lots of similarities.

DoT has selected NM Rothschild & Sons (India) and DotEcon as the two auctioneers. The auction would be conducted in two stages via internet. To begin with, the clock stage would allow the bidders to participate for all slots and then finalise the bidders who would be awarded a block in each of the service areas, where at least one block would be available for auction.

The clock stage would be followed by a frequency identification stage, which would identify specific frequencies available to the winning bidders. The frequencies identified will be announced simultaneously with the outcome of the auction. The entire auction process would be conducted online.

However, telecom anaylst Mahesh Uppal says this is not the first time that an e-auction is being held in a country. "E-auctions are always a more transparent and foolproof method of conducting auctions," says Uppal.

SnappyFingers - a Question and Answers search engine

by Guest 10/10/2008 9:55:00 AM

SnappyFingers is a new startup out of Bangalore and calls itself a search engine for Question and Answers. Their crawler crawls and indexes Question and Answers and FAQ’s from across the Internet and provides a convenient, single point of search from their website.

The site is currently in beta and as per Chirayu, the founder, they have a database of 3 million questions in their search index.

The concept is really nice and has some pretty good potential but in its current form, there are a few shortcomings. For example, a search for “Miami weather” shows some a few good results and also few bad results. Check this out..

A million dollars for your best idea!

by Guest 9/27/2008 12:06:00 AM

Google, as part of their 10 year anniversary, is launching Project 10100, offering millions of dollars to the best ideas they can find for helping people.

From their FAQ:

What is Project 10100Project 10100 (pronounced “Project 10 to the 100th”) is a call for ideas to change the world, in the hope of helping as many people as possible.

Why is Google doing this? The short answer is that we think helping people is a good thing, and empowering people to help others is an even better thing. Here’s the long answer.

How many ideas are you funding?
We have committed $10 million to fund up to five ideas selected by our advisory board.

As best I can tell you don’t need to execute the idea or even have a plan. They are paying for the idea itself. A creative thinkers dream! Except of course you likely lose control over the idea after you win your cash.

Read the full FAQ here. Deadline is October 20th.

Print what you like, A Great Site!!

by Guest 9/26/2008 9:49:00 PM

Every day we browse sites, infact a lots of them. Sometimes we like to print some content from a site. But often, we find that the web pages contain irritating advertisements and other unwanted content. It not only wastes the printer ink and other resources but leaves unwanted content in the hard copy. Finally, I came across a great, useful, easy and free online service: PrintWhatYouLike.com is a simple point-and-click element removal tool to make printing sites and pages without printer-friendly links much easier, and without any software.

Paste in the URL of a site, and you’ll get a left-hand sidebar that lets you click and and remove pictures, headlines, and other page elements. You can pull out the background image, isolate selected parts of the page, and even resize individual elements, all in the name of reducing ink usage and improving readability.

Better still, you can copy a link to the page you’ve just hacked to bits, giving web site owners with popular pages a free resource for printer-friendly versions.

Say 'Hello' with new Google's mobile phone - G1

by Guest 9/25/2008 11:12:00 AM

Google has finally announced its first ever mobile phone G1 on its own operating system Android this week. T-Mobile showed off its new G1 mobile phone at a press event in New York Tuesday, thus becoming the first carrier to offer a device run on Google’s Android open source mobile platform. The device, which was developed by device manufacturer HTC, has many of the features commonly seen on many of smartphones on the market, including a touchscreen with drop-and-drag capabilities, a pull-out QWERTY keyboard, and a host of Web-based applications for maps, music and instant messaging.

But the big reason that the phone has generated buzz in recent weeks is because it will be the first ever to run on Android, a Linux-based open source mobile platform that Google first debuted last November. One interesting item from the promotional video during the press conference appears to be a deeper integration of search into the mobile internet. It appears one can search from any page without launching a search app. There's also a dedicated search button on the physical keyboard.

Although it isnot available until November, we had the chance to get a quick look at the G1 at T-Mobile's launch event. The device is similar in size to the iPhone, but heavier at 158 grams, and has a 3.2in touch-driven display with a resolution of 320 x 480 pixel.

Cole Brodman, the chief technology and innovation officer for T-Mobile USA, said that T-Mobile is hoping to give its customers a mobile Internet experience comparable to the Web experience they get on their home computers. The phone will run best on local Wi-Fi networks or on T-Mobile’s GSM-based Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) 3G network. T-Mobile officially launched its first US-based 3G network in the New York this past spring, and the carrier has live 3G coverage in 16 major markets, Brodman said. The company plans to have 3G coverage in 22 major markets by mid-November, Brodman added.

Severed cable that offers 2GB of built-in storage

by Guest 7/29/2008 12:31:00 AM

I cannot help but think there will be a specific type of individual that will purchase this, without offering up any stereotype’s I am sure you can think of at least one.

While this looks like nothing more than a severed cable, its actually a 2GB flash drive, and its certainly one that will not get stolen that quickly. My biggest concern would be leaving this laying around on the table and having my wife coming in the room and tossing it in the trash can thinking it was junk.

One thing I can say without hesitation is that using this memory cable in public with some of the high-end notebooks that are currently on the market is going to make you look simply crazy.

No cameras. No lights. Just data.

by Guest 7/22/2008 10:41:00 PM

Did you hear about Radiohead? The band was making a new video, but they weren't using any cameras, just lasers and data. As you might imagine, we were intrigued.

The song is called “House of Cards,” from Radiohead’s recent “In Rainbows” album. In this new video, there were no cameras on set. Instead, two scanning technologies were used to capture 3D images. Geometric Informatics scanning systems produced structured light to capture 3D images at close proximity, while a Velodyne LIDAR system that uses multiple lasers was used to capture large environments such as landscapes. In the video, 64 lasers rotating and shooting in a 360 degree radius 900 times per minute produced all the exterior scenes.

Whether you're a music fan or a developer (or both), we agreed with the band that it would be great to give you a deeper look into how all of this was done, and even a chance to play with the data yourself, under a license that allows remixing.

You can view the video, watch a short documentary about how it was made, interact with the video in 3D, download some of the data, and download an iGoogle theme and gadget - all at http://code.google.com/radiohead
