Spotify hits milestone with 1 million subscribers

by Guest 3/9/2011 8:11:00 PM

Online music service Spotify has announced that it now has one million paying subscribers across Europe.

News of the milestone comes as Spotify continues a fund-raising from investors in advance of a launch in the US.

The Anglo-Swedish company has 6.67 million users, the majority of whom use a free service subsidised by adverts.

Spotify's profitability depends on users switching to premium services that remove adverts and allow listeners to use smartphones.

Spotify's co-founders

The company announced on its website's blog: "It seems like only yesterday we were hatching ideas for a new music service in a tiny office-cum-apartment with a broken coffee machine.

"So it's with a sense of real pride and excitement that we can announce a new milestone today, having welcomed our millionth paying subscriber to the service. "

Spotify is in the process of a $100m funding round that analysts estimate values the company at $1bn (£616m).

The company's plans to launch in the US have been delayed by concerns at the big music labels about the success of its business model.

Spotify pays royalties each time a song is played on its service.

Last year, it was estimated that the subscriber base represented about 7%-8% of Spotify's total user base.

But with one million subscribers, that percentage has risen to about 15%, the company said.

Facebook adds Samaritans suicide risk alert system

by Guest 3/9/2011 8:06:00 PM

Facebook is launching a system that allows users to report friends who they think may be contemplating suicide.

The feature is being run in conjunction with Samaritans, which said several people had used it during a test phase.

Anyone worried about a friend can fill out a form, detailing their concerns, which is passed to the social networking site's moderators.

It follows reports of several cases where Facebook users announced their intention to commit suicide online.

The reporting page asks for the address (URL) of the Facebook page where the messages are posted, the full name of the user and details of any networks they are members of.

Suicide-related alerts will be escalated to the highest level, for attention by Facebook's user operations team.

Police alert

"When a report is made, they then assess whether they need to call the police immediately or forward it on to us," said Samaritans' Nicola Peckett.

Facebook said that it had always been its policy to notify police if a user was at risk of imminent bodily harm.

The system had been operating in a trial mode, without publicity for three months, during which it received several genuine reports and no hoaxes, according to Samaritans.

It is hoped that the new reporting mechanism will help prevent cases like that of Simone Back, who died on Christmas day after taking a drug overdose.

The charity worker from Brighton had written about her intention to kill herself on her Facebook page.

Several of her friends commented on the message, however no-one raised the alarm.

Samaritans said that the new system was not launched in relation to one specific case, but to raise awareness of the ways in which people could get help.

iPhone alarms hit by New Year glitch

by Guest 1/4/2011 11:34:00 AM

A glitch on Apple's iPhone has stopped its built-in alarm clock going off, leaving many people oversleeping on the first two days of the New Year.

Angry bloggers and tweeters complained that they had been late for work, and were risking missing planes and trains.

Apple has acknowledged the problem and says it will be fixed by 3 January.

The reason has not been given but the glitch appears to affect single alarm settings on the iPhone 4 and earlier models with software updates.

According to the company, the problem will resolve itself on 3 January, but that is two days late for many people”

A similar problem hit the iPhone alarm when the clocks went back in November, again causing many users to be late for work or for transport arrangements.

"We're aware of an issue related to non-repeating alarms set for January 1 or 2," Apple spokeswoman Natalie Harrison said in a statement quoted by Macworld.

"Customers can set recurring alarms for those dates and all alarms will work properly beginning January 3."

'Two days too late'

Iphone

The problem is embarrassing for Apple, not only because of previous problems that came to light when the clocks changed, but because the company prides itself on the simplicity of use of its products.

This seems like another simple error, but it cannot afford to have too many before its reputation becomes tarnished, he says.

Apple failed to patch the problem last time - meaning the same alarm bug was reported around the world when the clocks changed in different regions, our reporter says.

Apple should have learnt from that example and seen this one coming, he adds. According to the company, the problem will resolve itself on 3 January, but that is two days late for many people.

More than 1.7m people around the world had bought iPhone 4 handsets by June 2010, in what was the company's most successful product launch.

Facebook suffers brief shut down

by Guest 12/20/2010 5:14:00 PM

Facebook was forced to take itself offline after a staff member accidentally leaked internal product prototypes.

The social network was unreachable for about 20-30 minutes while the mess was cleared up.

The outage happened as the site introduced redesigned brand pages, a revamped photos section and a new page management feature.

In a statement on its blog, Facebook apologised for the brief downtime.

"For a brief period of time, some internal prototypes were made public to a number of people externally." read the message. "As a result, we took the site down for a few minutes. It's back up, and we apologise for the inconvenience."

The BBC understands that the problem arose when code for a number of new products was exposed to the public before they were ready to be launched. This included a feature called "memories" that indexed what people have done on Facebook chronologically.More...

Google Refuses Full Gmail Access to Indian Govt.

by Guest 12/17/2010 6:55:00 PM

I'm sure you must have come across the BlackBerry encryption/Indian government issue in the past. As of now, BlackBerry maker RIM has till January 31, 2011 to hand over the encryption keys to intelligence agencies - keys that protect the content (like e-mail or chat) of millions of BlackBerry users in the country.

It seems that the Indian Government is training its eyes on all other forms of electronic communication that cannot pass through their radar. Google's popular e-mail service - Gmail - happens to be one of these. But as The Economic Times reports, Google's already given its verdict on the matter even before the government asking them anything. Google Inc. will not share the encryption keys of its email service with the Indian security agency, for reasons of compromising the privacy of millions of Gmail users worldwide. Google India chief Vinay Goel was speaking on the matter, "If requested, it would be impossible to offer real-time access since the Gmail service is governed by US laws. When users entrust their data with us, we are expected to protect it, which is why, user privacy is very important for Google".

But it isn't like Google is going to be completely turning a deaf ear for the call of the nation's security. Vinay said that they're open to offering the Indian government access if there's a large-scale risk to human life and property. But it makes me wonder whether the government would find this arrangement acceptable, since such a situation is not going to invite itself before coming, thus needing the government to monitor it all the time.

So, why is the government having such a hard time with security? As the ET write-up suggests, they don't have the technical resources to intercept communication on the internet that is protected by high levels of encryption. It also sounds pretty strange that the government actually asked Indian ISPs to tone down their encryption levels for them to monitor systems in the country.
This seems like a rather complex problem where you have companies that aren't willing to compromise on the privacy of their users that they swear to protect, versus the need for monitoring all possible forms of communication that some might use against the safety of the nation. What if the government does ask Google for access to their encryption keys for Gmail? Will they ban the popular mail service if they don't comply?

Yahoo’s Yuletide Layoffs Confirmed; 600 Jobs Axed

by Guest 12/15/2010 8:27:00 PM

Stumbling web giant Yahoo has cut back its staff just in time for the holidays, the company confirmed Tuesday, offering a stark contrast to rivals scrambling to add new hires as fast as they can.

The cuts were reported earlier by Kara Swisher at AllThingsD.

“Today’s personnel changes are part of our ongoing strategy to best position Yahoo for revenue growth and margin expansion and to support our strategy to deliver differentiated products to the marketplace,” the company said.

The reductions underscore the purple portal’s failing fortunes at a time when many of its direct competitors — including Google, Facebook and fellow also-ran AOL — are booming. The market for tech talent is so hot, a virtual market for soon-to-be-former Yahoo employees has already sprung up on recently launched question-and-answer site Quora.More...

UK Government websites may be next pro-Wikileaks focus

by Guest 12/14/2010 8:16:00 PM

The UK's national security adviser Sir Peter Ricketts has warned that government websites could become the next target for pro-Wikileaks hackers.

He told civil servants that websites used to file tax returns or claim benefits could be the most vulnerable.

So far attacks from the Anonymous group of hacktivists have concentrated on firms perceived to be anti-Wikileaks.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange faces an extradition hearing in London on Tuesday.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister told a press briefing that Sir Peter had spoken to permanent secretaries about the security of government websites in the light of pro-Wikileaks attacks.

"The priority would be websites that dealt with information that belonged to members of the public such as the DWP [Department for Work and Pensions] and HMRC [Revenues and Customs], he said.

The government did not want to speculate on the scale of the problem.

UK web attacks could be likely because Mr Assange is due in court in London later. He is wanted by authorities in Sweden for questioning over two sex crimes. He denies the crimes and will fight extradition, his lawyer said.

His mother Christine Assange, who has visited him in prison, said he remained committed to the ideals of Wikileaks.
She also passed on his thoughts on the firms which have withdrawn services from the whistle-blowing siteMore...

General Electric agrees £800m takeover of Wellstream

by Guest 12/13/2010 4:09:00 PM

US conglomerate General Electric (GE) has agreed an £800m takeover of UK oil and gas services company Wellstream.

Wellstream twice rejected GE's overtures of around 750p a share, but has now agreed an offer worth 786p.

The value of the deal includes a special dividend for Wellstream shareholders.

Wellstream manufactures pipes for the oil and gas sector, and has a big presence in Brazil, where exploration is expanding fast.

It announced in September that it had received several bid approaches.

GE said the value of the deal is a 29.1% premium to Wellstream's share price on the day it announced the takeover interest.
