IT cos moving to Vizag from Hyderabad

IT companies are moving lock, stock and barrel to Vizag from Hyderabad. One of the reasons is that their employees want a better quality of life.

The palatial campus of Kenexa, a human capital management company, is one among several companies that are relocating their headquarters to the Rishikonda Hills of Vizag. Kenexa has invested nearly USD 10 million to build the 700-seater campus. Nearly 60% of the company's employees working in Hyderabad have opted to move here.  “The first batch of 30-40 employees have already moved. Hopefully, by the year-end, 60 to 70 per cent of them will move here. Our future growth will be in Vizag. We are committed to it and this will be our future global service centre,” said Raghuveer Sakuru, MD, Kenexa (India). Kenexa said the reason for the move is increasing pollution and traffic congestion in Hyderabad. Though the company had to spend nearly USD 3 million on relocation packages for its employees, it's not complaining. "The cost of the land is significantly lower here. So, you can afford to build bigger buildings and give larger workstations. So, our average per employee square feet runs into 160-170 square feet,” said Rudy Karsan, Global CEO, Kenexa. Software companies are also relocating to Vizag. Satyam is constructing its second campus while Infosys, Wipro and TCS are making huge investments in the city.  Instead of going for fresh recruitment, the companies are planning to relocate their employees from Hyderabad to Vizag. They are hopeful that their employees will be more than willing to work from Vizag, even at lesser salary.  “The awareness among youngsters is such that they are willing to even accept 10-15% lower earnings and be in a place like Vizag than in a congested and polluted place like Hyderabad,” said Pradeep Dhobale, Chairman, CII Andhra Pradesh. The Vizag district authorities are trying to take advantage of the trend. They have started offering group-housing schemes to attract young professionals.

Brazil tracking India's 3G auction course

by Guest 3/8/2010 6:04:00 PM

The Brazilian government, which is also planning to hold an auction of 3G broadband wireless spectrum, has communicated to the

Department of Telecommunications that it would like to know more about the e-auction method that would be used by India [ Images ].

"The talks are at a preliminary stage. They (Brazil [ Images ]) have expressed their interest in our e-auction process," a senior DoT official told Business Standard on the condition of anonymity.

The auction of 3G, the airwaves which enable high-speed interent and broadband wireless access (BWA), will be held in India from April 9. DoT is set to use an e-auction method that would allow prospective bidders to access the platform using a standard web browser.

Brazil had taken the 3G route in 2007, where Vivo Participacoes, Claro, TIM and Tele Norte Leste Participacoes were the winners and remain the leading 3G providers in Brazil. The country now expects to auction the rights for around 44 licences for 3G broadband wireless (like our BWA) operators by June this year, according to reports.

Considering Brazil and India are both developing markets that have experienced high growth rate in the mobile population, the two markets have lots of similarities.

DoT has selected NM Rothschild & Sons (India) and DotEcon as the two auctioneers. The auction would be conducted in two stages via internet. To begin with, the clock stage would allow the bidders to participate for all slots and then finalise the bidders who would be awarded a block in each of the service areas, where at least one block would be available for auction.

The clock stage would be followed by a frequency identification stage, which would identify specific frequencies available to the winning bidders. The frequencies identified will be announced simultaneously with the outcome of the auction. The entire auction process would be conducted online.

However, telecom anaylst Mahesh Uppal says this is not the first time that an e-auction is being held in a country. "E-auctions are always a more transparent and foolproof method of conducting auctions," says Uppal.

Delhi is the best city to live in India

by Guest 3/8/2010 6:01:00 PM

Delhi is the best Indian city to live in, while steel city Jamshedpur ranks lowest in the Liveability Index 2010 prepared jointly by CII and Institute for Competitiveness.

The country's financial capital Mumbai [ Images ] comes second in the list of 37 cities mapped in the list, prepared on parameters like living standard, socio-cultural environment, education, medical standards and recreational possibilities among others.

Delhi [ Images ] comes on top in education, safety and economic environment; second in housing options, socio-cultural political environment; but medical standards remains the Achilles heel where the national capital finds 17th place.

"In overall quality of life, Delhi outscores on Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru [ Images ], Kolkata [ Images ], Hyderabad, Ahmedabad [ Images ], Pune and Gurgaon, which take up respective ranks second to ninth," the report said, adding that Faridabad, Ludhiana, Lucknow [ Images ], Patna, Visakhapatnam [ Images ] and Jamshedpur are the last six ranked cities on overall quality of life.

"Chandigarh is a surprising 14th on this, proving that a city needs much more than apparent beauty to be truly liveable," it said using data from organisations like Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy. Mumbai aced the demographic advantage and is blessed with the healthiest socio-cultural politico environment as well as natural-built environment, where Delhi comes close second. Delhi, however, turns out to be the safest city in the country "contrary to negative press against it".

Explore browsers beyond 'e'

by Guest 3/8/2010 1:42:00 PM

In the days leading up to the unveiling of Apple's impossibly hyped iPad, Mozilla quietly launched the Firefox 3.6 and claimed a whopping 20 per cent speed gain over its previous 3.5 version. Three days later, Google also unveiled its Chrome 5.0 browser.

Software makers, excluding Microsoft of course (which promotes its Internet Explorer browser, ubiquitous by the blue 'e' symbol), are correct when they claim that the biggest thing that keeps users from switching browsers is ignorance.

For all those who never thought internet was more than clicking on that 'e', here are some browsers that you might have never heard of but millions of net surfers swear by: Flock

We all use social networking sites and picture sharing sites, and if your web browser, too, is packed with extensions and a slew of other tools for interacting on the web, then maybe it's time to consolidate all these tools into one web browser. This is where Flock (version 2.5), a web browser for the collaborative web, comes in.

Image: Google Chrome.

Being an open source web browser, Flock is built on the Mozilla architecture used by Firefox. So, many of Flock's features should be familiar, like tab-based browsing and the ability to add extensions.

However, there are many new features that might appeal to the social networking brigade. One nice tool for bloggers is the clipboard, where you store text clips, pictures or URLs that you want to use later.

Speaking of URLs, the address bar can also be used as a search bar (Yahoo! is the default search engine) and contains one-click buttons for posting a link to the social news website Digg or emailing a link. Flock browser also has a built-in email client for Yahoo! Mail and Google's Gmail.

Image: Firefox.

If you are looking to consolidate, Flock aims to include all your tools in a single application. You can also track your multiple social accounts and services on a single control panel.

Now, the downside. Since Flock integrates a lot of sites, the integration tends to get a little wonky at times. For example, if you get a direct message (DM) in Twitter, Flock will let you know. And it will keep letting you know about it until you delete the DM - simply reading it isn't enough! So, if you have a DM you want to keep, the notification stays on.

The bottom line? If you are into social networking, then Flock can be the perfect browser for you.

Well, nearly perfect.

Avant

Internet Explorer remains one of the most used browsers out there, yet lacks many of the features found in some of the competition. So, what if you could use Internet Explorer and still add many more features that you have only heard of? Meet Avant Browser, an Internet Explorer-based, no-frills web browser.

It includes basic mouse gestures and tabbed browsing. The installation routine is simple and uninstalling it is as painless, leaving your Internet Explorer just like it was when you started. Avant Browser is by far the smallest download at less than 2 MB.

Once installed, you get a colourful interface, complete with contrasting icons. Avant features a pop-up blocker that is one of the best we have seen on any browser. The Flash animation filter cleverly blocks Flash components on web pages that are just annoying adverts.

Using the filter to block animations allows you to claw back some precious bandwidth - particularly handy for helping speed up browsing on steam-powered dial-up connections. Better yet, it allows pop-ups that are games or mail attachments, but not ads.

Very professional.

Opera

Opera Software's browser is a really good piece of work. The company bills it as 'The fastest browser on earth!', and it does not disappoint. Opera 10.5 is a free browser that needs 9.4 MB to load itself and offers excellent support.

It has a combination of features that will allow you to experience the web in a new way. For example, through voice commands, you can navigate the web and even have Opera read the text to you. We were sceptical, but the feature worked.

The browser offers tabbed browsing, complete with the ability to save tabs and even un-delete them. This Norwegian software also has the ability to surf the web utilising mouse gestures.

The page-zoom feature is a pleasant inclusion, and so are the developer shortcuts to turn off style sheets and images. In other browsers, you have to go through multiple menus or use bookmarklets for this.

One of Opera's most notable new features is Opera Unite. This personal web server gives users 10GB of cloud storage to easily share such content as photos and files with all Opera-enabled devices. We believe that other browsers will soon begin to offer similar features. Opera's popular Turbo (page compression for faster loads on slow connections) and Link (synchronisation of bookmarks, etc over the web) also make a reappearance in this latest version.

Users now have the ability to make any new tab a private tab and use private tabs alongside normal ones.

A million dollars for your best idea!

by Guest 9/27/2008 12:06:00 AM

Google, as part of their 10 year anniversary, is launching Project 10100, offering millions of dollars to the best ideas they can find for helping people.

From their FAQ:

What is Project 10100Project 10100 (pronounced “Project 10 to the 100th”) is a call for ideas to change the world, in the hope of helping as many people as possible.

Why is Google doing this? The short answer is that we think helping people is a good thing, and empowering people to help others is an even better thing. Here’s the long answer.

How many ideas are you funding?
We have committed $10 million to fund up to five ideas selected by our advisory board.

As best I can tell you don’t need to execute the idea or even have a plan. They are paying for the idea itself. A creative thinkers dream! Except of course you likely lose control over the idea after you win your cash.

Read the full FAQ here. Deadline is October 20th.

Strong Perspective

by Guest 9/26/2008 6:51:00 AM

Perspective

Oneday, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to thecountry with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.

They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, 'How was the
trip?'

'It was great, Dad.'

'Did you see how poor people live?' the father asked.

'Oh yeah,' said the son.

'So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?' asked the father

The son answered:

'I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.

We buy our food, but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them.'

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, 'Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.'

Isn't perspective a wonderful thing?

Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.

Appreciate every single thing you have,
especially your friends!

.

'Life is too short and friends are too few.'
