Google Adwords, Adsense Networks Crash in India. No Ad delivery for hours together on most days

by Guest 3/12/2010 1:17:00 AM

It may sound unbelievable! How could Google FAIL? Well, the fact is that Google has been pathetic during the last few weeks at least in India. Google Ad servers have crashed causing the otherwise omnipresent Google Ads to disappear from millions of web pages viewed in India. The situation looks critical as on 11.03.2010, with very long breakdown extending several hours.

During the last few weeks, Google the most widely used search engine which makes money by publishing content relevant text and image ads in millions of websites has been very erratic in serving Ads in India.

Publishers, find Blank spaces in all websites where Ads should appear. The problem continues for hours before Ads reappear. Incidentally, the problem do not seem to be due to shortage of Ad inventory. What is happening is total blackout during which time no Google Ad appears in millions of pages viewed in India, across all websites. Its surprising that Google has not been able to attend to the issue though the problem has been simmering for weeks.

While the Google Adwords Ads can be seen in Google Search Result Pages without break, Ads are not delivered consistently, in the content network . The performance has been very poor leaving thousands of publishers feeling let down.

Interestingly, since Adwords are appearing in Google Search Pages, Google makes money there. But Ad publishers who also post paid Ads in Google Search, lose the opportunity to recover part of the costs, since their website are not displaying any Ads.

Downturn effect: More loyal employees!

by Guest 3/10/2010 4:25:00 PM

More than a third of employees surveyed have become more loyal to their companies after the economic downturn as the difficult conditions helped in strengthening bonds between workers and bosses, global workforce solutions provider Kelly Services said.

According to the global survey, conducted between early October 2009 and end of January 2010, 36 per cent respondents in India  said the economic downturn has made them more loyal, while five per cent said it has made them less loyal.

At the same time, 58 per cent said the downturn has made no difference. Those workers who are more loyal to their employers attribute the shift to positive management, positive morale, and pay levels that have improved or remained steady, the survey stated.

However, those who are less loyal believe it is due to falling pay, poor management and low company morale. "Employers who have communicated openly with their staff about difficult economic conditions and tried their best to look after staff, have been able to build strong levels of trust in their firms.

This heightened loyalty is likely to become a real advantage, with a more committed and focussed workforce, as the economy recovers," Kelly Services Managing Director India Kamal Karanth said. Other key findings of the survey revealed that close to 60 per cent of respondents feel "totally committed to their current employer".

When asked to name the one thing that would make an employee more committed to their job, 52 per cent cited 'more interesting or challenging work', followed by 'more meaningful responsibility' (21 per cent), the Kelly Services survey said. In assessing a firm's reputation, employees place most weight on the quality of its leadership, products and services and employees.

Least important are features such as global presence, financial performance and initiatives aimed at fostering corporate social responsibility, it said. "When we look at the things that motivate people in the workplace, it's clear that opportunities for personal growth and development are critical, as is the chance to perform stimulating and challenging work," Karanth said.

"Pay is certainly a motivator but it's not as big as some imagine, which means that employers have to examine a broader range of employee conditions and business features if they want to have the workforce performing at its best," he added.

The findings are part of the Kelly Global Workforce Index, which obtained the views of about 134,000 people, including over 4,000 in India.

Microsoft may launch Zune-like phone

by Guest 3/9/2010 3:33:00 PM

If Apple and Google can launch their own smartphones, can Microsoft be left behind? Not likely, if one goes by the internet buzz that the Redmond-based software giant is partnering original device manufacturers and mobile service providers like Verizon to launch a cellphone by mid-2010.

A techie blog site, Gizmodo, broke the news with snapshots of the mobile device, after which cyberspace is being flooded with news that Microsoft is working on an internal project titled 'Pink'.

"We think Microsoft is partnering with a few ODM manufactures to create the Zune-like phone, which includes 720p HD video and at least a 5 mega pixel camera," a senior technology analyst based in Hong Kong told Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

Ramadorai set to become BSE chairman

by Guest 3/8/2010 3:29:00 PM

S Ramadorai, vice-chairman of Tata Consultancy Services [ Get Quote ] (TCS), is set to become non-executive chairman of the Bombay Stock Exchange [ Images ] (BSE) following the exit of Jagdish Capoor last week on health grounds.Ramadorai will join BSE board on Monday and assume the role of chairman later.

It is likely that board member Ishaat Hussain may resign. Hussain is also the director of Tata Sons, the Tata Group holding company. When contacted, Hussain declined to comment on the issue.

"I'm not liable to speak to anyone regarding BSE. If I have to say any thing, I'll talk to the BSE board," he said. Ramadorai, who became the TCS CEO in September 1996, played an integral role in development of the company.

He helped the company to become the world's largest global software services firm, with revenues of over $6 billion, before retiring in 2009.

According to industry players, the appointment of Ramadorai, a pioneer of the IT Industry in India [ Images ], will not only revive BSE's image but the exchange will also be able to capitalise on his experience in terms of technology.

BSE has been striving hard to enter into the exchange technology space, where the National Stock Exchange is fighting the Jignesh Shah-promoted Financial Technologies to gain larger market share. BSE could also witness election for the post of yet another trading member director.

Explore browsers beyond 'e'

by Guest 3/8/2010 1:42:00 PM

In the days leading up to the unveiling of Apple's impossibly hyped iPad, Mozilla quietly launched the Firefox 3.6 and claimed a whopping 20 per cent speed gain over its previous 3.5 version. Three days later, Google also unveiled its Chrome 5.0 browser.

Software makers, excluding Microsoft of course (which promotes its Internet Explorer browser, ubiquitous by the blue 'e' symbol), are correct when they claim that the biggest thing that keeps users from switching browsers is ignorance.

For all those who never thought internet was more than clicking on that 'e', here are some browsers that you might have never heard of but millions of net surfers swear by: Flock

We all use social networking sites and picture sharing sites, and if your web browser, too, is packed with extensions and a slew of other tools for interacting on the web, then maybe it's time to consolidate all these tools into one web browser. This is where Flock (version 2.5), a web browser for the collaborative web, comes in.

Image: Google Chrome.

Being an open source web browser, Flock is built on the Mozilla architecture used by Firefox. So, many of Flock's features should be familiar, like tab-based browsing and the ability to add extensions.

However, there are many new features that might appeal to the social networking brigade. One nice tool for bloggers is the clipboard, where you store text clips, pictures or URLs that you want to use later.

Speaking of URLs, the address bar can also be used as a search bar (Yahoo! is the default search engine) and contains one-click buttons for posting a link to the social news website Digg or emailing a link. Flock browser also has a built-in email client for Yahoo! Mail and Google's Gmail.

Image: Firefox.

If you are looking to consolidate, Flock aims to include all your tools in a single application. You can also track your multiple social accounts and services on a single control panel.

Now, the downside. Since Flock integrates a lot of sites, the integration tends to get a little wonky at times. For example, if you get a direct message (DM) in Twitter, Flock will let you know. And it will keep letting you know about it until you delete the DM - simply reading it isn't enough! So, if you have a DM you want to keep, the notification stays on.

The bottom line? If you are into social networking, then Flock can be the perfect browser for you.

Well, nearly perfect.

Avant

Internet Explorer remains one of the most used browsers out there, yet lacks many of the features found in some of the competition. So, what if you could use Internet Explorer and still add many more features that you have only heard of? Meet Avant Browser, an Internet Explorer-based, no-frills web browser.

It includes basic mouse gestures and tabbed browsing. The installation routine is simple and uninstalling it is as painless, leaving your Internet Explorer just like it was when you started. Avant Browser is by far the smallest download at less than 2 MB.

Once installed, you get a colourful interface, complete with contrasting icons. Avant features a pop-up blocker that is one of the best we have seen on any browser. The Flash animation filter cleverly blocks Flash components on web pages that are just annoying adverts.

Using the filter to block animations allows you to claw back some precious bandwidth - particularly handy for helping speed up browsing on steam-powered dial-up connections. Better yet, it allows pop-ups that are games or mail attachments, but not ads.

Very professional.

Opera

Opera Software's browser is a really good piece of work. The company bills it as 'The fastest browser on earth!', and it does not disappoint. Opera 10.5 is a free browser that needs 9.4 MB to load itself and offers excellent support.

It has a combination of features that will allow you to experience the web in a new way. For example, through voice commands, you can navigate the web and even have Opera read the text to you. We were sceptical, but the feature worked.

The browser offers tabbed browsing, complete with the ability to save tabs and even un-delete them. This Norwegian software also has the ability to surf the web utilising mouse gestures.

The page-zoom feature is a pleasant inclusion, and so are the developer shortcuts to turn off style sheets and images. In other browsers, you have to go through multiple menus or use bookmarklets for this.

One of Opera's most notable new features is Opera Unite. This personal web server gives users 10GB of cloud storage to easily share such content as photos and files with all Opera-enabled devices. We believe that other browsers will soon begin to offer similar features. Opera's popular Turbo (page compression for faster loads on slow connections) and Link (synchronisation of bookmarks, etc over the web) also make a reappearance in this latest version.

Users now have the ability to make any new tab a private tab and use private tabs alongside normal ones.

Speech by Chetan Bhagat at Symbiosis
----------------------------------------------

Don’t just have career or academic goals. Set goals to give you a balanced, successful life. I use the word balanced before successful. Balanced means ensuring your health, relationships, mental peace are all in good order.

There is no point of getting a promotion on the day of your breakup. There is no fun in driving a car if your back hurts. Shopping is not enjoyable if your mind is full of tensions.

"Life is one of those races in nursery school where you have to run with a marble in a spoon kept in your mouth. If the marble falls, there is no point coming first. Same is with life where health and relationships are the marble. Your striving is only worth it if there is harmony in your life. Else, you may achieve the success, but this spark, this feeling of being excited and alive, will start to die. ……………….

One thing about nurturing the spark - don't take life seriously. Life is not meant to be taken seriously, as we are really temporary here. We are like a pre-paid card with limited validity. If we are lucky, we may last another 50 years. And 50 years is just 2,500 weekends. Do we really need to get so worked up? …………….

It's ok, bunk a few classes, scoring low in couple of papers, goof up a few interviews, take leave from work, fall in love, little fights with your spouse. We are people, not programmed devices........." :)

"Don't be serious, be sincere."!!

5 revenue boosters for Desi IT cos

by Guest 6/30/2009 1:22:00 PM

Battling a paucity of new contracts in its core western market, the country's information technology industry is turning its gaze inwards. While there is a slump in demand from cash-strapped global customers for new technology services, the home market is increasingly looking good for Indian IT players, with contract sizes matching the ones available overseas.

The habitual growth monster is eyeing government's Rs 40,000-crore technology spend to cope with the downturn. Also, post-elections, with a stable government at the centre, conditions seem ripe for e-governance projects to take off at both the central and state levels.

The government departments plan to spend big monies in their so-called `mission mode projects’, as the centre and state governments embrace e-governance and look to digitise everything -- from land records to tax filing. In fact, companies such as TCS, HCL and Wipro have won significant government business in recent months.

Here's looking into the growing domestic pie of Indian IT companies.

National ID card project

The national ID card project (popularly called UID project) is expected to provide an impetus to the domestic demand for IT products and solutions. A billion smart cards for a billion population means a multi-billion dollar business opportunity for domestic IT companies.

Some estimates suggest that the project will create at least an 100,000 additional jobs in the country in the next three years. The government had earmarked Rs 100 crore in the interim budget to kickstart the UID project. The entire ID card project is estimated to be in the range of around Rs 1.5 lakh crore, with the first phase - which will cover ultra urban, urban, and semi-urban populations - offering a Rs 6,500 crore business opportunity.

According to the plan, govt proposes to issue a unique identification number to all citizens by 2011. The Unique Identification Authority of India shall own and operate the unique identification number database and also look after its updation and maintenance on an ongoing basis. In the beginning, the UID number will be assigned based on the National Population Register or electoral rolls. Photographs and biometric data will be added to make the identification foolproof.

Healthcare

With healthcare being an important area, the govt is looking at automation of hospitals to maintain health records of citizens for distributing medicines to crack down on spurious drugs and to monitor an epidemic situation.

The telemedicine project, which will help offer medical services and advice to thousands of patients in remote parts of the country could cost almost Rs 5,000 crore depending on the scope, a senior government official familiar with the project told ET on conditions of anonymity. Some pilot telemedicine projects have already been successful in the North East. The government is also working on automating the public distribution system that provides food items at reasonable prices to poor households.

Indian Railways

Indian Railways reportedly plans to spend some $1.5 billion on upgrading its IT systems in the next two to three years. It aims to automate and integrate various processes of crew management, train scheduling and freight by spending up to $2 billion over the next few years.

Indian Railways, which is the second largest rail network in the world, also plans to outsource a contract called ‘implementation of software-aided train scheduling’, valued at around Rs 450 crore.

Indian Railways is launching mobile ticketing vans to make the booking of tickets easier. The first mobile ticketing van would be launched in Mumbai as a pilot project. The van equipped with up linking facility will issue tickets for both reserved and unreserved categories. The Railways is also planning to bring all stations across the country under one network.

Postal department

The state-owned India Postal Department too is gearing up to become a more efficient and customer-friendly organisation. Indian Post plans to evolve as an agency for delivering many citizen services through automated kiosks.

The change of logo in September last year endeavours to reflect the Indian Postal services’ corporate approach. It also reflects the departments new thrust on leveraging technology to connect the nation better.

Initiatives like DakNet, ePost and Instant Money Order (iMo) just show the growing technology side of our postal department.

e-governance deals

There are also scores of the government projects that relate to the filing of income-tax, central excise, transport services, computerising municipalities and the police force and developing e-district and e-courts.

Similarly, Desi IT companies are currently participating in pilots with various state governments and Central departments on a number of biometric devices they have developed. Such devices can be used to enroll a person in a particular scheme, check his attendance (for instance, the required 100 days under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and ensure the money goes to him and not someone else. By linking such a device to a Central database, the implementation of a programme can be measured and leakage can be checked.

Money, Memory and Experience..

by Guest 4/10/2009 1:09:00 PM

Money hasno memory. Experience has…

You willnever know what the total cost of your education was, but for a lifetime youwill recall and relive the memories of schools and colleges. Few years fromnow, you will forget the amount you paid to settle the hospitalization bill, but will ever cherish having saved your mother's life or the life you get to livewith the just born. You won't remember the cost of your honeymoon, but to thelast breath remember the experiences of the bliss of togetherness. Money has nomemory. Experience has.

Good times and bad times, times of prosperity and times of poverty, times whenthe future looked so secure and times when you didn't know from where thetomorrow will come… life has been in one way or the other a roller-coaster ridefor everyone. Beyond all that abundance and beyond all that deprivation, whatremains is the memory of experiences. Sometimes the wallet was full… sometimeseven the pocket was empty. There was enough and you still had reasons to frown. There wasn't enough and you still had reasons to smile. Today, you can lookback with tears of gratitude for all the times you had laughed together, andalso look back with a smile at all the times you cried alone. All in all, lifefilled you with experiences to create a history of your own self, and you alonecan remember them all.

The first time you balanced yourself on your cycle without support…
The first time she said 'yes' and it was two years since you proposed…
The first cry… the first steps… the first word… the first kiss… all of yourchild…
The first gift you bought for your parents and the first gift your daughtergave you…
The first award… the first public appreciation… the first stage performance…
And the list is endless… Experiences, with timeless memory…

No denying that anything that's material costs money, but the fact remains thecost of the experience will be forgotten, but the experience - never.

So, what if it's economic recession? Let it be, but let there not be arecession to the quality of your life. You can still take your parents, if noton a pilgrimage, at least to the local temple. You can still play with yourchildren, if not on an international holiday, at least in the local park. Itdoesn't cost money to lie down or to take a loved one onto your lap. Nice timeto train the employees, create leadership availability and be ready for thewonderful times when they arrive. Hey! Aspects like your health, knowledgedevelopment and spiritual growth are not economy dependent.

Time will pass… economy will revive… currency will soon be in current… and inall this, I don't want you to look back and realise you did nothing but stayedin gloom. Recession can make you lose out on money. Let it not make you loseout on experiences… If you are not happy with what you have, no matter how muchmore you have, you will still not be happy.

Make a statement with the way you live your life: How I feel has nothing to dowith how much I have.
