FakeLeaks: Twitter abuzz with chatter

by Guest 12/11/2010 10:15:00 AM

Mumbai: Pakistani terrorist Ajmal Kasab today accused police of staging a fake encounter at Girgaum Chowpatty to falsely implicate him in the 26/11 attacks and told the Bombay High Court that he had not killed constable Tukaram Ombale.

The News and The Express Tribune newspapers, which carried the news report, apologised for it today though Indians and Pakistanis did not fail to take a dig at the development. They were at their imaginary best on social networking website Twitter, where one of the trendy topics was "WhatAgenciesWantLeaked."

Sample this: "Kargil never happened. It was a complete set up by Indian Army to provide war-plot for Bollywood films," read a tweet by Mayank. More...

Software piracy - A necessary evil for promotion?

by Guest 11/27/2010 4:15:00 PM

It is a matter of irony that the Indian software industry loses over $2 billion to piracy annually but many believe that software counterfeiting is beneficial for business and thus they accept it as a necessary evil. Recently many studies have indicated that software privacy is on a decline in India, which some see as a proof that piracy will wither away in improved economic conditions.

Software piracy poses a serious threat to PC security for users, loss of income for the manufactures and loss of revenue for the government by means of legitimate taxes. The huge difference in price of the original software versus the pirated software is the main reason for software counterfeiting.

A study by Business Software Alliance and IDC reveals that Indians used 65 percent pirated software in 2009, which is 3 percent lower than the previous year.

Installations of unlicensed software on personal computers in India fell from 68 percent in 2008 to 65 percent in 2009. As per the study, India ranks 20 in global software piracy rankings. A Microsoft survey reveals that 86 percent of Indians are ready to pay more for genuine software. Reducing India's software piracy rate is likely to create over $4.6 billion over the next four years.

Software counterfeiting should be well understood to evaluate its serious implications. According to Nasscom, software piracy involves the use, reproduction or distribution of software without having received the expressed permission of the author. Software privacy is mainly of 4 kinds such as user piracy, hard disk loading, software counterfeiting and internet piracy. More...

IIM student who turned down corporate offers to join Congress

by Guest 11/19/2010 4:45:00 PM

Himanshu Meena has his priorities sorted. The IIM-B student wants to change India's politics and will intern with the Congress party next summer.

Off the beaten path', 'breaking new ground' - the cliches are endless, but what happens when an IIM student shuns the lure of investment banking firms and FMCG companies and decides to work with a political party? 'Killing a career before it started', 'professional suicide' most would exclaim. Himanshu Meena takes the brickbats in his stride.

The IIM Bangalore student will spend the summer of 2011 with India's oldest political party - the Congress.

For all post-graduate programmes in all the IIMs an internship is compulsory. Corporate giants line up at campuses in November for 'summer placements', which take place in April-May. Himanshu decided he would skip the placements. Because he plans to set up a consultancy firm which will devise campaign strategies for political parties in the run up to elections.

"I followed the last US Presidential elections and noticed how immensely organised the whole process was," says Himanshu. "In India, there is no organisation, no record of what funds go where, whether they are actually used at all. So I want to bring in a process that makes everything clear."

Mangalore kid's Doodle for peace in Google's homepage

by Guest 11/15/2010 5:30:48 PM

Search engine Google displayed a special doodle on its India home page Sunday to celebrate Children's Day, the birth anniversary of the country's first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Also the good news is that Akshay Raj, a class IX student of St Aloysius High School, Mangalore, is the winner for this year's 'Doodle 4 Google' competition, a release issued by the company said.

The winning doodle was live on the Google India homepage yesturday. Raj will also receive a
Technology Starter Package and 2 lakh technology grant for his school, the release said. It took 90 days and over 1 lakh entries for the country to get its second 'made in India' doodle.  Dennis Hwang - the Master Doodler - and Jennifer Hom - the creative force behind the Google Gandhi doodle - chose the winning doodle for India out of the 41 semi-finalists.

The 'Doodle 4 Google' competition was open to all students from I to X standard. This year participants were challenged to imagine their own version of the Google logo based on the theme 'My Dream for India'.

Besides the national winner, three group winners were also chosen. These were picked through an online voting system where the Indians voted for their favourite doodle from the finalists. Google 'doodles' are creative logos that appear on some special days, to commemorate scientific  and artistic achievements, historic or seasonal events, and other local occasions. For over a decade, Google has been designing innovative logos called 'doodles' for its homepage.

Have U ever heard about LPG gas cylinder's expiry date....!!

by Guest 3/12/2010 7:44:00 PM

Do you know that there is an expiry date (physical life) for LPG cylinders? Expired Cylinders are not safe for use and may cause accidents. In this regard, please be cautious at the time of accepting any LPG cylinder from the vendor.

Here is how we can check the expiry of LPG cylinders:
On one of three side stems of the cylinder, the expiry date is coded alpha numerically as follows A or B or C or D and some two digit number following this e.g. D06.

The alphabets stand for quarters -
1. A for March (First Qtr),
2. B for June (Second Qtr),
3. C for Sept (Third Qtr),
4. D for December (Fourth Qtr).

The digits stand for the year till it is valid. Hence D06 would mean December qtr of 2006.
Please Return Back the Cylinder that you get with a Expiry Date, they are prone to Leak and other Hazardous accidents ...
In the same way if it is D13 it allows the cylinder to be in use until Dec 2013 .

Kindly pass this to every one, and create awareness among the public .

Telangana row delays IIM-A's Hyderabad campus

by Guest 3/9/2010 11:16:00 AM

Late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's [ Images ] dream of having an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the state is unlikely to materialise any time soon.

IIM Ahmedabad [ Images ] (IIM-A), which had agreed to set up a campus in the state, has not been able to start work due to the political uncertainty caused by the Telangana [ Images ] issue.

"The Andhra Pradesh government did offer us land to set up a campus in Hyderabad. However, ever since the political turmoil, things have been more or less at a status quo. We are now waiting for a revival in response from the government's side. It's not that we have dropped the plans altogether," IIM-A Director Samir Barua told Business Standard.

IIM Bangalore (IIM-B), too, has declined the state's offer of land for a campus, citing faculty constraints.

"We thought about it, but finally said no to the proposal. Our bottleneck is faculty. We are on the look-out for quality faculty members even now. It will not be advisable to split faculty members between two campuses," IIM-B Director Pankaj Chandra said.

Since an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) had already been sanctioned for Andhra Pradesh in 2006, the state wasn't on the preferred list for new IIMs that the central government planned to set up in the 11th Five Year Plan. Accordingly, Reddy mooted a proposal to IIM-A and IIM-B in 2008, requesting them to set up an "extended campus" in the state. IIM-A is learnt to have been offered nearly 150 acres at a nominal cost and a Rs 100-crore interest-free loan.

Sources in the Andhra Pradesh government said the current political situation had forced institutes to take a wait-and-watch approach.

"We invited a number of institutes to set up a campus in the state and many of them agreed. But everything is on-hold right now due to the disturbance and bandh calls in the state. Even the government has been pre-occupied with its own internal affairs," said a state official.  Meanwhile, the Bangalore-located Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is said to be considering over a similar invitation from Andhra Pradesh.

"We have received the proposal from the Andhra Pradesh government and we are in talks for the next step forward," IISc Registrar Mohan Das said. According to sources, the institute has been shown four or five land parcels and is keen on a 1,000-acre plot that is on the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh border.

IMT's plans on track

Incidentally, the Ghaziabad-based Institute of Management Technology (IMT) has accepted the state government's invitation and is in an advanced stage of setting up its campus in Hyderabad — its third in the country.

"We are about to begin construction on a 30-acre plot in Hyderabad. It has been over a year since the state government offered us the land. We hope the new campus will be operational by 2011," IMT Ghaziabad Director Anwar Ali said.

Delhi is the best city to live in India

by Guest 3/8/2010 6:01:00 PM

Delhi is the best Indian city to live in, while steel city Jamshedpur ranks lowest in the Liveability Index 2010 prepared jointly by CII and Institute for Competitiveness.

The country's financial capital Mumbai [ Images ] comes second in the list of 37 cities mapped in the list, prepared on parameters like living standard, socio-cultural environment, education, medical standards and recreational possibilities among others.

Delhi [ Images ] comes on top in education, safety and economic environment; second in housing options, socio-cultural political environment; but medical standards remains the Achilles heel where the national capital finds 17th place.

"In overall quality of life, Delhi outscores on Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru [ Images ], Kolkata [ Images ], Hyderabad, Ahmedabad [ Images ], Pune and Gurgaon, which take up respective ranks second to ninth," the report said, adding that Faridabad, Ludhiana, Lucknow [ Images ], Patna, Visakhapatnam [ Images ] and Jamshedpur are the last six ranked cities on overall quality of life.

"Chandigarh is a surprising 14th on this, proving that a city needs much more than apparent beauty to be truly liveable," it said using data from organisations like Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy. Mumbai aced the demographic advantage and is blessed with the healthiest socio-cultural politico environment as well as natural-built environment, where Delhi comes close second. Delhi, however, turns out to be the safest city in the country "contrary to negative press against it".
