Telangana row delays IIM-A's Hyderabad campus

by Guest 3/9/2010 11:16:00 AM

Late Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy's [ Images ] dream of having an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in the state is unlikely to materialise any time soon.

IIM Ahmedabad [ Images ] (IIM-A), which had agreed to set up a campus in the state, has not been able to start work due to the political uncertainty caused by the Telangana [ Images ] issue.

"The Andhra Pradesh government did offer us land to set up a campus in Hyderabad. However, ever since the political turmoil, things have been more or less at a status quo. We are now waiting for a revival in response from the government's side. It's not that we have dropped the plans altogether," IIM-A Director Samir Barua told Business Standard.

IIM Bangalore (IIM-B), too, has declined the state's offer of land for a campus, citing faculty constraints.

"We thought about it, but finally said no to the proposal. Our bottleneck is faculty. We are on the look-out for quality faculty members even now. It will not be advisable to split faculty members between two campuses," IIM-B Director Pankaj Chandra said.

Since an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) had already been sanctioned for Andhra Pradesh in 2006, the state wasn't on the preferred list for new IIMs that the central government planned to set up in the 11th Five Year Plan. Accordingly, Reddy mooted a proposal to IIM-A and IIM-B in 2008, requesting them to set up an "extended campus" in the state. IIM-A is learnt to have been offered nearly 150 acres at a nominal cost and a Rs 100-crore interest-free loan.

Sources in the Andhra Pradesh government said the current political situation had forced institutes to take a wait-and-watch approach.

"We invited a number of institutes to set up a campus in the state and many of them agreed. But everything is on-hold right now due to the disturbance and bandh calls in the state. Even the government has been pre-occupied with its own internal affairs," said a state official.  Meanwhile, the Bangalore-located Indian Institute of Science (IISc) is said to be considering over a similar invitation from Andhra Pradesh.

"We have received the proposal from the Andhra Pradesh government and we are in talks for the next step forward," IISc Registrar Mohan Das said. According to sources, the institute has been shown four or five land parcels and is keen on a 1,000-acre plot that is on the Karnataka-Andhra Pradesh border.

IMT's plans on track

Incidentally, the Ghaziabad-based Institute of Management Technology (IMT) has accepted the state government's invitation and is in an advanced stage of setting up its campus in Hyderabad — its third in the country.

"We are about to begin construction on a 30-acre plot in Hyderabad. It has been over a year since the state government offered us the land. We hope the new campus will be operational by 2011," IMT Ghaziabad Director Anwar Ali said.

Delhi is the best city to live in India

by Guest 3/8/2010 6:01:00 PM

Delhi is the best Indian city to live in, while steel city Jamshedpur ranks lowest in the Liveability Index 2010 prepared jointly by CII and Institute for Competitiveness.

The country's financial capital Mumbai [ Images ] comes second in the list of 37 cities mapped in the list, prepared on parameters like living standard, socio-cultural environment, education, medical standards and recreational possibilities among others.

Delhi [ Images ] comes on top in education, safety and economic environment; second in housing options, socio-cultural political environment; but medical standards remains the Achilles heel where the national capital finds 17th place.

"In overall quality of life, Delhi outscores on Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru [ Images ], Kolkata [ Images ], Hyderabad, Ahmedabad [ Images ], Pune and Gurgaon, which take up respective ranks second to ninth," the report said, adding that Faridabad, Ludhiana, Lucknow [ Images ], Patna, Visakhapatnam [ Images ] and Jamshedpur are the last six ranked cities on overall quality of life.

"Chandigarh is a surprising 14th on this, proving that a city needs much more than apparent beauty to be truly liveable," it said using data from organisations like Centre for Monitoring of Indian Economy. Mumbai aced the demographic advantage and is blessed with the healthiest socio-cultural politico environment as well as natural-built environment, where Delhi comes close second. Delhi, however, turns out to be the safest city in the country "contrary to negative press against it".

How to get Address Proof in India?

by Guest 2/8/2009 12:26:00 PM

Many working people often shift their houses. For them, it is difficult to produce an address proof issued by Govt with latest address.
Our India post (post office) has come up with a solution.
Now you can get an Address proof along with your photo from India post.

Since the ID proof is issued by India post which is a central government organization, it is similar to Govt ID cards like Driving license, Voters ID etc.

It can be used for opening bank accounts, for getting telephone/internet connections etc.
The total cost for getting this ID card is Rs.250/ (Rs.10 for application and Rs.240/- processing fee).
Inform everybody. This is very useful
For more details enquire in the nearest post office.

Oracle India staff now get hour-based pay?

by Guest 1/6/2009 2:30:00 PM

The world's second-largest software products company Oracle is understood to have begun linking the payment of its 20,000-odd employees in India with the productive hours they spend in the company. This has resulted in salary cuts, ranging between 10 and 50 per cent across the board.

Company sources explain that if an employee is a billable resource for 15 days a month, he will be paid in full for that period while for the rest of the period, he is paid a "nominal" amount. Replying to an email query, a company spokesperson in India said: "Oracle does not comment on speculation or rumours."

The company is also understood to have asked all non-billable employees (those on the bench) to get themselves engaged in internal projects, failing which they can explore opportunities outside the company. It is not, however, clear whether the company is asking the non-billable resources to work for outside companies as contract employees while still on Oracle's rolls, or to use their non-productive hours to make money for themselves.

Initially implemented for the employees of Oracle Financial Services Software (formerly i-Flex Solutions), Oracle India has reportedly implemented this across all its centres in India.

Oracle India, however, has not communicated this decision to employees in writing. The team leaders and project managers in different centres have been informed about the decision orally.

"They are telling us that while many companies are laying off employees, Oracle does not want to take such extreme steps. They are saying that once things start improving, we will be back to all the usual compensation and allowances," said a senior employee of Oracle India on condition of anonymity.

Second quarter results announced last month show that Oracle had been able to maintain its profitability despite nearly flat revenue growth. Oracle's net income fell half a per cent to $1.27 billion in the second quarter and sales were up 5.5 per cent to $5.6 billion, lower than  analyst estimates. Revenues from new software licences, which is an indicator of future sales, were down 3 per cent to $1.6 billion.

Following its acquisition of i-Flex, sources also note that there were plans to lay off all employees of that company, a decision that was scrapped following intervention of Oracle's management. Oracle feared that the lay-off of all i-Flex employees might suggest the failure of the M&A -- an area that has been mastered by the California-headquartered company over the years.

Sources added that Oracle India has cancelled employee travel costs and withdrawn free snacks and food. Despite news that the company has not stopped recruitments in India, freshers who were given offer letters for annual packages of Rs 2.4 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh earlier are now being asked to consider packages of Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 1.8 lakh.

SnappyFingers - a Question and Answers search engine

by Guest 10/10/2008 9:55:00 AM

SnappyFingers is a new startup out of Bangalore and calls itself a search engine for Question and Answers. Their crawler crawls and indexes Question and Answers and FAQ’s from across the Internet and provides a convenient, single point of search from their website.

The site is currently in beta and as per Chirayu, the founder, they have a database of 3 million questions in their search index.

The concept is really nice and has some pretty good potential but in its current form, there are a few shortcomings. For example, a search for “Miami weather” shows some a few good results and also few bad results. Check this out..

Cheating at Restaurants

by Guest 9/16/2008 9:46:00 AM

Dear all

On July 23rd 2008, I had been to hotel Citi Towers, Coimbatore - which is one of the most renowned restaurant over here. The bill was for Rs.2596/- and I had given my ICICI bank debit card asthe mode of payment. As usual, they took the card and came back to me with a 'merchant' and 'customer' copy of the transaction for Rs.2596/- They gave the card back to me first and then these two papers I put signature in both and gave them back merchant copy. Before leaving, I gave Rs.20/- in cash to the waiter. Today I got my ICICI debit card statement and in that I found twotransactions made for this hotel July 23 - Rs.2596/- and July 26 - Rs.44/- Astonished to c this, I called up the hotel and they transferred call to accounts section. The account manager in charge told me that he'll sent me the details of the transaction I have done in their bank. Below is the message I got from them:

Faceless 'aliens' spotted in crowd at Wimbledon

by Guest 7/9/2008 9:26:00 PM

With the blankest of blank expressions on their faces, these mysterious figures have been popping up in the most unlikely of places. With a membrane of skin stretched tightly over their eyes, noses and mouths, the alien-like figures were most recently snapped 'watching' a match perched on Murray Mount at Wimbledon.

The pair sit in on a match, where most of the crowd are too absorbed by the game to notice them

Close inspection of the pictures rules out an alien invasion - small perforations around the eye areas of the masks allow the people beneath to see the world outside. But nobody knows who the faceless figures, who often appear as motionless couples are, or why they are turning up at high profile events. Theories include the possibilities that they are  limelight-seeking pranksters, performance artists or that they are at the centre of a viral marketing campaign for an as-yet unknown product of forthcoming horror film.

Another faceless couple stand in the crowd at the start of Harrods summer sale

Craning his neck - but he won't see anything with skin stretched over his features

Speculation has even arisen that the masks hide a pair of well-know faces, fed up with being harrassed by the paparazzi. One blogger wrote on the Moue Magazine website: "They probably aren’t just random people off of the street. "If it ends up being a pair of celebrities who have had it with being photographed all of the time and are staging a protest, I vow to support every project they appear on from now on.  "Whatever their purpose, I want to join them. And I have a new Halloween costume for this year."

This faceless figure even has his own driver, fuelling speculation that the man behind the mask may be a celebrity himself

Close-up: Eye holes in the spooky mask allows the wearer to see what is going on around him

Theories include the possibilities that they are limelight-seeking pranksters, performance artists or that they are at the centre of a viral marketing campaign for an as-yet unknown product of forthcoming horror film.

What do you think??

The brand name will speak more than a service.

by Guest 7/7/2008 9:42:00 PM

The Caption of Castrol bike zone is "World Class Service" but the service that they are providing is "World's Worst Service".

Hey folks,

I am using TVS APACHE bike since one year. I had not used the bike for past few months. I have some minor problem with my bike. The problems were like pick-up, milage and a noise from engine. I gave the bike for servicing in TVS showroom. But the problems were not rectified.

As we know the service which is provided by company service points, I inquired my friends about the problems with my bike and one of my friends has advised me to get the service from Castrol bike zone at S.R Nagar, Hyderabad (mahie bike franchise of Castrol). The brand is well known to all and I expected a world class service from it. I explained the problem with service engineer, I requested him not replace the spare parts since it’s a one year old bike.

In the evening, I got call from the service provider that the bike got repaired .I went for a trial with engineer but the noise from the engine still not rectified... I discussed with engineer about the problem and he told that there was manufacturing defect in the engine and it will cost me around Rs.3000 to get it repaired. The problems which I have explained to him not got rectified and he was arguing with me saying that they provided good service. I went to TVS Showroom regarding that problem  and explained it to the engineer there. I have been asked to replace the clutch plates which costed me around 300 bucks, and the problem has been rectified. I called the Castrol service provider and I explained how the problem has been rectified.

Friends the service is too bad. Castrol bike has 3 predefined services and the 3 services are just for name sake.

The brand name will speak more than service. Moral of the story - 'Don't be blinded with great brands. Brands need not reflect the real service.'
